What happened

Apple's first touchscreen Mac may be only weeks away. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote in his Sunday Power On newsletter that a redesigned MacBook Pro should debut "by next month," 9to5Mac reported.

What's new: The laptops would be Apple's first MacBooks with touch screens and tandem OLED displays, 9to5Mac said. Gurman wrote that they are "significantly lighter," with parts shrunk and rearranged inside. Today's 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs up to 4.8 pounds, versus 3.3 pounds for the 15-inch MacBook Air. He did not say how much weight Apple will cut.

Chips and software: The new models are expected to use the current M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, not new M6 chips. Gurman said Apple is testing them with macOS 27.2, now in beta, MacRumors reported. A Dynamic Island is expected to replace the notch. MacRumors said the touch models would sit above the regular MacBook Pros, and the final name is not settled.

Why it matters

It would be the first Mac with a touch screen. It is also an early look at Apple's product choices under Ternus.

What’s next

Watch for an Apple announcement and for macOS 27.2, which MacRumors expects late this month.

More context

Ternus in the design studio: Gurman also reported that new CEO John Ternus has taken a hands-on role with Apple's industrial design and human interface teams, which now report to the CEO, ETV Bharat said. Ternus ran hardware engineering before he became CEO.

Timing: On his Oct. 1 podcast, Gurman said the launch could come "as early as October" but might slip to November, MacRumors reported.
